Air Traffic Management

Digital Tower Technology Coalition Pushing Remote ATC. With growing interest in digital and remote towers in the U.S., aviation stakeholders have formed the Digital Tower Technology Coalition to support their integration into the National Airspace System. These systems allow controllers to manage airports remotely using high-definition camera arrays that provide a real-time, 360-degree view. The FAA had tested the concept in Leesburg, Virginia, and Fort Collins in the past decade, but paused the programs to focus on developing standards.

FAA Completes First Phase of New Notam System – The FAA has completed the first phase of its long-planned upgrade of the notam system by shutting down the backend of the previous 40-year-old system and moving users to the new cloud-based Notam Management Service (NMS)

NBAA Offers World Cup Tournament Traffic Guidance – With the FIFA World Cup tournament set to kick off next month across North America, NBAA’s traffic desk is providing advice for operators intending to visit any of the 16 host cities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Much as it does for similar high-profile sporting events such as the Super Bowl, the organization suggests that aircraft operators obtain parking reservations with their preferred FBO as early as possible.

Safran advances open-fan engine tests – An effort to bring the first open-fan engine to the skies by 2035 took a step forward last month, with the start of a Safran-led research project.

Hyundai partners with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to reactivate Supernal – Supernal, the US-based advanced air mobility (AAM) arm of Korean automaker Hyundai, announced that it is preparing to resume work on its aircraft program after striking a partnership with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the main aerospace and defense firm in South Korea. Back in September, the company fired the bulk of its workforce. Now it will act as the Design Authority and Technical Lead to define the aircraft’s vision and requirement.

Hermeus Breaks Sound Barrier with Uncrewed Quarterhorse – Hermeus has pushed its uncrewed Quarterhorse Mk 2.1 past the sound barrier, reaching Mach 1.21 during its third test flight at Spaceport America in New Mexico.

Human-AI teaming in the cockpit – SESAR presents a summary of the research project DARWIN done in collaboration with Honeywell and DLR. The team has developed a digital co-pilot with agents that can support the human pilot’s role for diversion selection, workload management and state monitoring. What is more interesting is that they have developed it from the start to comply with EASA guidance for Level 1 and 2 AI applications – there are few use cases of such applications, it’s good to see working prototypes. The DARWIN webpage also contains videos of their technology in action.

AeroTube video contest – Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) organises a video contest for students and early career professionals. In it, you can talk of any topic related to aerospace that motivates you. The video can be done individually or as part of a team. The deadline for application is Aug 31. Their webpage presents previous winners.

European Bizav Already Weak—And Then Came War – With discriminatory taxes and SAF mandates, European governments have left their aviation sector with a sluggish growth rate
